![]() Their authors vehemently denied that the Atlantic Revolutions would bring greater freedom. From the 1770s onward, as revolutionaries on both sides of the Atlantic rebelled in the name of liberty, a flood of pamphlets, treatises and newspaper articles appeared with titles such as Some Observations On Liberty, Civil Liberty Asserted or On the Liberty of the Citizen. This particular way of thinking about freedom was pioneered in the late 18th century by the defenders of the Old Regime. This means that freedom can best be preserved by institutions that curb the power of those majorities, or simply by shrinking the sphere of government as much as possible. Democratically elected majorities, conservatives point out, pose just as much, or even more of a threat to personal security and individual right-especially the right to property-as rapacious kings or greedy elites. From this perspective, preserving freedom has little to do with making government accountable to the people. ![]() In their view, true freedom is not about collective control over government it consists in the private enjoyment of one’s life and goods. ![]() Over the past 250 years, the cry for liberty has also been used by conservatives to defend elite interests. John Lewis called on Americans to “let freedom ring”, he was drawing on this tradition.īut there is another side to the story of freedom as well. ![]() In fact, the freedom in a Montessori environment means self-control, being able to choose the things a child wants to do, and being responsible for his/her own choices.While these groups had different objectives and ambitions, sometimes putting them at odds with one another, they all agreed that their main goal-freedom-required enhancing the people’s voice in government. When a child has established good habits in the classroom or in life, knows how to respect himself/herself and others, and can make the right choices and naturally show obedience, the child will have true freedom, an inherent freedom that makes the child feel safe on the environment and get normalized in the environment. All this is like a small orderly society.įor example, in the classroom, a child is free to pick up the work he/she wants to do, but if he/she does not put the previous work back to its position, then he/she violates the classroom discipline, and he/she will be limited to do the previous work and can not pick up a new work or if he/she wants to do the work that another child is doing, he/she needs to learn to wait. In the Montessori classroom, children are free to choose to work independently or work with others, and they can remind each other or even guide young children to comply with the classroom life routine. The teaching materials in each area are equipped with self-correcting features. Children self-educate by operating the materials in the classroom. ![]() In a prepared environment, teachers will first observe and then give guidance according to the interest of each child and their development pace and needs, allowing children to explore and learn spontaneously. Montessori environment is a free and open learning space, and imitating everyday life carries out the activities in the environment. In children’s personality development process, if we allow children to do whatever they want, we are allowing them to be at the mercy of momentary desires and impulses, which will eventually hurt other people, the environment, and even themselves. But the definition of freedom is not excessive permissiveness. Only when children are able to have freedom of movement, freedom of choice, freedom of language, and freedom of being trusted can they have physical and mental development and shape their unique personality. In other words, "Freedom is not to do what you want to do, but to do the right thing." In the Montessori classroom, children are not allowed to do “whatever they want to do”, they can only choose freely the beneficial and useful work. "Freedom" is one of the most important principles of Montessori teaching, but the freedom Montessori advocated is not to indulge children, or to let them do whatever they want. ![]()
